live projects
Projects related to restorative justice and it’s response to the lapses of Criminal Justice administration in Nigeria and across Africa. Our causes presents a visible and positive approach to implement a cognitive and permanent solution.
Restorative Justice for Africa(REJA) was set up as a structural response to fill the gaps in the Administration of Criminal Justice in Africa. These life projects will focus on drastically improving the Nigerian Criminal Justice System and they will address issues such as the living conditions of custodial centers, the health and welfare of inmates, training of Correctional officers and Law enforcement agents, and equally ensure separate facilities for adults and children in trouble with the law (juveniles), as well as other necessary welfare interventions.
Through these projects, we hope to achieve humane conditions in correctional facilities for inmates, improve the menstrual hygiene of women behind bars, put an end to the remand of children/minors in the same custodial facilities as adult offenders, improve the service delivery of law enforcement agents, reduce criminal re-offending and ultimately solve the problem of chronic overcrowding across correctional centers in Nigeria.
The Legal Aid Booth (LAB) Project
This project is executed in partnership with the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the FCT Judiciary, Ministry of Justice, Nigerian Correctional Service and the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee to establish the first-of-its-kind legal booths within court premises to bring legal aid services closer to the people who need it most to prevent unjust incarceration.
Safe Period Behind Bars
This is a capacity building training for female inmates and female Warders. The project officially commenced in January, 2020 and seeks to train these women on safe Menstrual Hygiene Management behind bars. The project will also empower 2000 women across correctional facilities in Nigeria to make and sell reusable sanitary pads.
Peace and Community Justice
This project works on the alternatives to imprisonment by decriminalizing petty offenses so as to decongest the Prisons. This project also works with the communities to ensure that restorative practices are extended to victims as well as offenders.
Borstal 36 Movement
A campaign against the admission of minors into adult Correctional Centers to cohabit with hardened criminals. Borstal 36 Movement will advocate for the building of one Borstal Institution in all the 36 states in Nigeria.
The Future of Justice
This is a Restorative Justice and Capacity Building training organized to improve research and train law officers, paralegals as well as law enforcement agents on international best practices.
